Inkling: Mira Murati's First Model Bets on Customizable Over Smartest

Mira Murati's Thinking Machines released Inkling on July 15, its first model since she left OpenAI as CTO to found the lab in 2023 -- open-weight, a mixture-of-experts system with 975 billion total parameters that draws on roughly 41 billion for any given task. Agility Robotics is going public via a $2.5 billion SPAC merger, reporting more than $300 million in contracted orders for Digit v5 -- a "cooperatively safe" model designed to work fence-free alongside people, with a 50-pound lift and swappable hands. A separate startup, Humanoid, has a deal with auto-parts maker Schaeffler to go live in German production environments before the end of 2026. Across the Pacific, WAIC's exhibition floor is running the same argument physically: Zhiyuan brought a 1:1 replica of an industrial assembly-and-logistics line specifically to counter skepticism that robots can do real work, and Pudu Robotics showed a "one brain, multiple embodiments" architecture meant to run the same AI system across several different robot bodies.

Four things, and none of them is "can it walk." Perception means reliably understanding an unstructured, constantly changing environment, not a fixed staged set.
